Mangaia: Deep in the South Seas for a vacation of a life time.
This most unique tropical island, believed to be the oldest in the Pacific is the southernmost of the Cook Islands only 40 flight from Rarotonga. The main feature of the island is its ancient coral reef, called Makatea, that has risen up to 60 metres above sea level forming a high ring around the island.
Mangaia Island is the most quiet of Cook Islands. It is renowned for its shell neck oraments. These are hand made from the shells of the tiny yellow snail, the pupu, which emerges only after the rain. Mangaia Island is also nicknamed the coconut Island. |
